Introduction
A modified Vauxhall VX220 with a 1/2 tonne of rocket motor power? Roll cage essential!
Details
Staff and students at the University of Hertfordshire have engineered a full‑scale, rocket‑powered Vauxhall VX220. Fitted with an O066 roll cage supplied by Safety Devices, the car houses a powerful hybrid rocket motor capable of generating more than half a tonne of thrust. With the vehicle weighing a similar amount, it’s expected to launch from 0–60 mph in around three seconds—quicker than almost any road‑going car. For safety purposes, however, and due to limitations on propellant storage, its top speed is capped at just over 60 mph.
Further Information
The project aired on BBC One’s Bang Goes the Theory in 2012, and featured on the University’s website.
