Introduction
In September 2024, we were commissioned to undertake the design and manufacture of a roll cage for a Defender, Purdy, entered into the Dakar Classic 2026.

The Dakar Rally is recognised globally as one of the most demanding motorsport events, with the Classic category presenting additional complexities through extended stages, extreme environmental conditions, and stringent contemporary safety requirements applied to historic vehicles. This context required a highly considered and disciplined engineering approach from the outset.
The roll cage formed a critical element of the vehicle’s safety system, serving as the primary protective structure for the crew. Its design and fabrication required strict adherence to regulatory standards, precise execution, and a focus on structural integrity and durability, while maintaining the operational functionality of the vehicle over the full duration of the event.
Manufacture was carried out over a number of months, with each stage subject to detailed inspection and quality control. Every tube, weld, and reinforcement was engineered to withstand the sustained vibration, material fatigue, and severe terrain associated with the Dakar Rally.
The vehicle subsequently competed in the Dakar Classic 2026, entered by the only all-women crew in the category. Observing the vehicle successfully complete the event was a significant milestone and reflected the importance of thorough preparation and robust engineering.
